Mr. Postman

The studio make-over is still going slow but I couldn't resist getting a little something for the walls.  I found this on Etsy while looking for some sort of arty screen print poster.  I have a mild obsession with type and a not so mild obsession with fiber, so I had a fit and ordered this immediately here from a gal named Jennie Gee in Brooklyn.

 

It's a fun spin on the Keep Calm and Carry On poster that seems to have taken over blogland and the design world.  She does not have a blog that I know of (if you do please pass it this way) and I have not seen any of her other work.  I can't wait to see what she comes up with next.  

I am also waiting on Natalie Chanin's new book Alabama Studio Style.  I have so much to say about her work I will have to save it for another post.  The book should get here tomorrow, along with color cards of the fabric she uses.  I am absurdly excited to check the mail this week!

Random thoughts converge

So, it has been a little too long since I posted last.  I have been caught up with waves of productivity and then getting side tracked wanting to try something new.  And I swear, every time I plan a day to take pictures the clouds roll in and I lose my lighting.  Sheesh!  Anyway, all the random is coming together and spring is definitely singing in the South!

I have never really been a fan of pictorial quilt blocks but I have been mesmerized by the old schoolhouse block lately.  My oldest son is graduating from kindergarten next month and I guess I am just getting a bit sentimental.  I did this block using paper piecing.  It came together really quickly and is not a hack job like it would have been if I had used a template.  I plan on incorporating some embroidery into this quilt that sort of hints at vintage samplers.

I recently picked up this book of work done by Elaine Reichek.  I met her very briefly in art school when she toured our department.  This particular exhibit consisted of samplers put into a subversive context as well as some other pieces.  It was completed from 1996-1999 and exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art.  I cannot even articulate how awe inspiring she is.  I don't think you have to stitch to appreciate it.
